Cao Lei was the winner of two golds and one silver at the last championships. This time around, she was aiming to take home three golds. After three successful attempts in the snatch, however, she was awarded a silver for hoisting 128 kilograms. The gold went to world record holder Natalia Zabolotnaya from Russia. Nevertheless, Cao Lei tried again in the clean and jerk, and completed her first two lifts with apparent ease. Though She failed to lift 160 kilogram in her last attempt, it was enough for her to take home two golds by winning the clean and jerk, and also the total score.

Korean weightlifter wins third straight world championship

Jang Mi-ran of Korea won the world championship title in women's weightlifting for the third consecutive year on Wednesday (Sept. 26), raising her hopes for a gold medal in the Beijing Olympics next year.

Jang, 24, combined lifts of 138 kg in the snatch and 181 kg in the jerk to finish with a total of 319 kg, the same amount of weight hoisted by her archrival Mu Shuangshuang of China.

Chang, however, won the title in the 75 kg division at the championships held in Chiang Mai, Thailand because she weighs less than Mu.

"I am so happy to win the title," she said. "I have always tried to be confident of doing well. I have never thought of bad results."

Chang said she would like to give "good news" again to Koreans at the Beijing Olympics. "I want to win the gold," she said.

At 170 centimeters tall, Chang began her career in 1998, inspired by her father who was a weightlifter.

Unbeatable in Korea, she began drawing global attention when she clinched the silver in the 2004 Athens Olympics.

China's Mu breaks the world mark
Thailand booked seven berths, including four from their women, in next year's Olympic Games in Beijing at the end of the World

Chinese women claimed 12 gold to capture the overall crown and the prestigious trophy of HRH Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn. Russia came in second place.

The hosts claimed two silver and one bronze to finish third overall and secure four Olympic berths.

China also landed the men's overall crown, while Bulgaria and Russia finished second and third places respectively. Thailand came in 21st position to obtain three Olympic berths.

China also captured the overall title to take home the prestigious King's Cup.

Meanwhile, China's Mu Shuangshuang on Wednesday broke a world record for the total lifted in the women's 75kg category. The 23-year-old lifted 139kg to win gold in the snatch, and hoisted 180kg in the clean and jerk to set a new world record of 319kg in total.

South Korea's Jang Mi-Ran, the previous world record holder, also lifted 319kg but only after Mu, meaning the Chinese lifter is the new record holder.

However the South Korean won gold in the aggregate because she is lighter than Mu - weighing 115kg (253 pounds).

Mu, who weighs more than 135kg, took silver in the aggregate category.

Olha Korobka of Ukraine hoisted 126kg in the snatch and 155 in the clean and jerk to claim the bronze medal overall.

In the men's over 105kg, Viktors Scerbatihs of Latvia won the snatch gold (202kg) and the overall gold (442kg). Russia's Evgeny Chigishev took the clean and jerk gold (240kg)

Stoitsov won a close fight to take two gold medals in the clean and jerk and the Olympic total in the World Weightlifting Championships in Thailand on Friday.

Stoitsov bedazzled the fans by lifting a 205kg in the clean and jerk and beat Armenia's Gevorg Davtyan by one kilogram in the total event.

The Bulgarian weightlifter lifted 158kg in the snatch but came back strong to win the clean and jerk and a combined weight.

"I was absolutely ready to battle even if I had to lose five kilograms before the fight. This is my personal best record," said Stoitsov who started weightlifting at the age of 13.

"Although I did not do my best today, I won two golds in my first major competition. I hope to do the same in the Olympics," Stoitsov added.

Stoitsov along with South Koreans Kim Kwang-hoon and Sa Jae-hyouk were neck and neck in the clean and jerk. Kim lifted 201kg to settle for the silver, beating Sa by 1 kilogram.

European champion Armenia's Gevorg Davtyan lifted 164kg to take the snatch silver and 198kg in the clean and jerk for a combined 362kg which fetched him the Olympic total silver.

"For a few minutes I felt I was the champion. But the best man won today and I congratulated him," said the Armenian who was celebrating with his coach after the clean and jerk.

Asian champion Li Hong from China won the bronze with a total lift of 361kg. He made a hat-trick in the snatch which he has dominated since 2005 with the lifting of 166kg. The snatch bronze went to Russian Oleg Perepechenkov after lifting 163kg.

China has won 13 gold medals out of 18 on offer. Bulgaria has won two golds while Cuba, South Korean and North Korea have won one each.
