Hidayat breaks two national records
By Ajitpal Singh
HIDAYAT Hamidon set two national records en route to winning the D final in the 69kg category at the World Weightlifting Championships in Chiangmai, Thailand, on Friday.
The 32-year-old posted 130kg in the snatch and 165kg in the clean and jerk, which broke his own national record by two kilogrammes.
Hidayat's combined total of 295kg saw him finish 25th.
But Hidayat's feat may not be enough for him to make the cut for the Beijing Olympic Games as only the top 16 qualify for Beijing.
Hidayat's teammate, Mohd Faerul Talib, failed in all his three attempts in the snatch although he lifted 155kg in the clean and jerk. He was not placed.
In the 77kg category, Zulkifli Che Rose totalled 298kg (132kg-snatch; 166k-clean and jerk) to finish 34th.

Qiu Hongmei wins gold medal in weightlifting worlds
CHIANG MAI, Thailand, Sept. 22 (Xinhua) -- World record holder Qiu Hongmei of China wasted four attempts but still won the gold medal in the women's 58kg category at the weightlifting world championships here on Saturday.
Qiu, world record holder in the jerk at 141kg, combined lifts of 103kg in the snatch with 135kg in the clean and jerk to finish with 238kg.
Qiu missed her first two attempts in the jerk on 133kg. She called for 135kg, which put her in position to win the gold medal.
She tried her best in the last chance, and hoisted 135kg in determination to catch the gold.
"I don't know why I failed in four attempts. There was nothing wrong with me but I was not excited enough in the competition," Qiu told press.
"I was almost fainted when she began to lift 135kg," said Ma Wenhui, head coach of Chinese women's team.
Marina Shainova of Russia, bronze medalist in the worlds in 2005, challenged Qiu as she took the lead with 105kg in the snatch while Qiu followed her on 103kg.
The 21-year-old Shainova stumbled in the jerk when she also failed in her first two attempts and finally lifted 132kg.
"I think Shainova is not an all-round lifter, because she did not do a good job in her jerk," said Ma.
Snatching 103kg, Qiu had to lifted at least 135kg to steal the gold from Shainova and she did so after two unsuccessful attempts.
Shainova took the silver and Jong-ae of DPR. Korea the bronze on 227kg.
Earlier in the day, defending champion Andrei Rybakou of Belarus broke one world record to take the gold medal with a total of 393kg in the men's 85kg category.
Rybakou, silver medalist in Athens Olympics, showed his awesome power in the snatch as he hoisted 187kg in his third attempt to create the new world record.
"I've been prepared for that for a long time," Rybakou told press.
Aslambek Ediev of Russia lifted the silver with 372kg, 21kg less than Rybakou and Vadzim Straltsou of Belarus the bronze on 370kg.
Rybakou became the first lifter who set world record in the ongoing world championships in Chaing Mai.
Chinese Lu Yong, silver medalist in the worlds in 2005, finished with the sixth place with a toal of 363kg.
"I sprained my left ankle after I arrive here. I could feel the pain when I was lifting," he said.

Guo Yue, Li Xiaoxia overcome top duo to snatch gold at Asian championships
YANGZHOU, China, Sept. 22 (Xinhua) -- Young pair Guo Yue/Li Xiaoxia beat top duo Zhang Yining/Wang Na to win women's doubles title at the Asian table tennis championships here on Saturday.
Trailing 9-11 in the first set, teenage duo Guo Yue/Li Xiaoxia was jolted awake and rallied past their strong rivals 11-6, 11-9, 12-11.
Playing a fast game, Guo Yue/Li Xiaoxia gave no chance for their opponents to come back, pulling off a 4-1 victory after taking the deciding set 11-6.
"We made full preparation before the match and practiced a lot," said Guo.
Wang Nan blamed their failure on a weak nerve, saying that she did not seize key opportunities while playing.
The champion is the third China has won at the Asian tournament after the men's and women's team titles. It is also China's 11th women's doubles title at the Asian championships.

Rybakov beat his own world mark by one kilo to take the snatch title for a second successive year and also lifted 206kg to take the clean and jerk gold and the overall crown.
His lift in the snatch was 15kg heavier than silver medallist Aslambek Ediev of Russia.

In the women's 58kg class, China's Qui Hongmei won two golds in the clean and jerk (135kg) and total weight (238kg). Russia's Marina Shainova took the gold in the snatch with a lift of 105kg.
Qiu (103kg) came in second in the snatch and O Jong Ae of North Korea (100kg) third. Wandee, an Olympic bronze medallist, could only manage 95kg for sixth place.
Qiu's 135kg in the clean and jerk beat Shainova's 132kg. O and Wandee both lifted 127kg but the North Korean got the bronze be cause her body weight was lighter.

Liu sets two records, wins three golds
BANGKOK, Sept 23 (Reuters) - China's Liu Haixia set two world records on her way to winning all three gold medals in the women's 63kg class at the world weightlifting championships on Sunday.
Liu set a new mark of 142kg in the clean and jerk and lifted 115kg in the snatch to set an overall world record of 257kg and take all three gold medals in Chiang Mai, Thailand.
The 26-year-old, who won the 58kg gold at last year's world championships, wiped out two of the three records held by Thailand's Pawina Thongsuk by 1kg, beating overall silver medallist Svetlana Tsarukaeva of Russia by 7kg.
Her effort in the snatch was 1kg shy of the record held by world, Olympic and Asian champion Pawina, who withdrew from the competition citing poor fitness and university commitments.
Liu became the second lifter to break a world record at this week's competition after Andrei Rybakov of Belarus set a new mark in the men's 85kg snatch on Saturday.
Liu's three golds took China's tally to 17 from the 27 handed out so far.
