Tamás Aján and WADA
« on: Aug 24, 2007, 11:15 AM »
I looked up Tamás Aján on Wikipedia, and I found the end of the third paragraph interesting.  It says he is a council member to WADA.  I can't help but think that there must be some sort of conflict of interest here.  I don't want to accuse the man of anything, and I will assume that he is doing everything he can to stop doping in our sport.  HOWEVER, if there were some corruption, I can't help but think that one could use his position in WADA...Say, for example, would a nation/athlete be able to bribe some information out of him, such as out of comp testing schedules?

I'm kind of surprised by lack of responses.  Was this something everybody already knew?  Or people don't care, or perhaps people are not worried about any conflict of interest?

Walter

PS  Since I learned this, I have heard rumors (and they are just that, rumors) that he had been "protecting" some athletes

I did not know it, but I am not surprised. A legitimate explanation is that it is essential that the sports with doping problems be involved in combating the problem and on the other hand it looks like it could be a conflict of interest. The IWF makes money from records, not doping positives. On the other hand, it seems clear that drug testing is having an impact in the battle of evasion versus detection.

This is a very interesting topic. If you look at the number of weightlifters and the countries that these athletes represent who have tested positive over the past few years, I think that you will see that it appears that some headway is being made in the fight against doping in our sport. Do we know how many of those testing positive were via IWF Testing vs WADA Testing? I think it is good that for our sport that Ajan is a WADA Board member (I think he has been in from the beginning) and as a IOC member. I think that we can also see that though athletes are testing positive from certain countries that are strong in Weightlifting, that those countries still seem to continue having athletes perform at a high level. Is it because they find new ways to enhance performance or do they have a great system of support for the sport of Weightlifting. I think the worst thing for our sport is to have a policy where a country can buy their way out of a suspension. Is Ajan on the up and up, I would hope so, because if he isn't and it ever came to light that he was not, it would most certainly be most devestating for our sport.
