Bossier City weightlifters capture gold medals in AAU National Junior Olympics
By Jerry Byrd
KNOXVILLE, TN. – Bossier City weightlifters won gold medals in three divisions of the national AAU Junior Olympics Weightlifting Championships here last week.
Dominick McAtee, who is going into the eighth grade at Elm Grove Middle School, won the 50 Kilo title in the 14-15 age group with 46 kilos in the snatch and 64 kilos in the clean and jerk.
He was trailing after the snatch, but had a personal record by four kilos in the clean and jerk. His younger brother, 10-year-old Demetrius McAtee, won the 39 Kilo title in the 11-under age group with personal record lifts of 25 kilos in the snatch and 36 kilos in the clean and jerk.
Another Elm Grove eighth grader, Michael Birmingham, won the 50 Kilo title in the 12-13 age group with personal records of 48 kilos in the snatch and 51 kilos in the clean and jerk. Birmingham also took second place in the pound-for-pound competition among lifters in all age groups and weight classes.
Birmingham and Demetrius McAtee made every lift in their respective divisions. The three national champions have been training under Dr. Kyle Pierce at LSUS.
