Mike,

Thanks. Kyle is an extremely likable guy, someone who I think is pretty flexible and easy going. That increases my interest in knowing if there was consensus on this decision or maybe Kyle just didn't want to have a fight about it.

Mike - Well, remember, I am getting older!! Curt made 100, misssed the clean on 107.5 (got pinned and I told him to put it down), then he made 107.5. Another sidelight is that ABC's Wide Wrold of Sports came in the next day (meets were 2 days then) and Dr. Larry Scott told ABC they had missed the best lifter of the meet.
So, they asked Curt to go back out and make his lifts again for Wide World of Sports. He went out and did 107.5 at least as easily as he had done the day before. Of course, he was probably at least 1 - 1/2 kgs. heavier.
Curt really just about always took what I said. In Bulgaria I think he was a little nervous and wanted to be sure of his opener. He did agree to jump 5 kgs. on his 3rd attempt. - Marty

My experience with Curt was '85-'89 training and going to meets with him.  Most lifters want to start too high, but I would not put Curt in that category.  But, he was almost always so far ahead of the field that he could lift conservatively.

Jeff used to start lobbying for his openers about six to seven weeks out.  It made workout discussions interesting.

Mike - As you might guess, when Curt was young there were no real discussions. I picked the weights and he lifted them. As you know, he was very quiet which belied the fact that he was very bright.
I remember at one of Carl Miller's camps he talked about K values and a formula and he said most of the older kids could not do the math. Curt and Stewart had no problem, though. - Marty

I can understand not wanting to send athletes who will be very far off the pace or not sending a full team if it is a "non-vintage" year for uS juniors but lifters such as Colin Ito made the 100% qualifying total, just not in the requisite event (I think he made it at collegiates but not at Jnr Nationals). I do not understand why athletes such as this would not be taken to the competition especially if full team slots were still left available.

James was in the 105kg B session along with myself and he did his last warm up on 150 and that was no worries for him so i was expecting 160 to be a good opener, maybe 150 then jump up would hav been better for him.
