2007 Canadian Championships
« on: May 20, 2007, 05:00 PM »
I've just returned from viewing at the Canadian Senior Championships, where there was some excellent lifting. The meet was held in the small town of St. Thomas, Ontario under the directorship of Daniel Pare.

Most people want to hear about the lifting. I don't have full results but I am sure one of the provincial organizations will post them on their sites this week. Apologies if my details aren't 100% correct.

The 56 kg and 62 kg classes were very sparsely populated. I can't recall the details of the first class, but the 62 kg class were won by veteran Francois Lagace of Quebec who has represented Canada several times internationally.  He lifted 98+115 I believe. As he told me, at 34 years old he just lifts to have fun.

The fight for the 69 kg class was a fight between Dominic Lussier of Quebec, and Jasvir Singh of British Columbia. Lussier totalled 262 on lifts of 117 and 145, while Singh lifted 112+150. Singh, who only weighed 63.7 and who originally intended to compete in the lighter class, won the category on bodyweight.

The 77 kg class was won by Francois Luna Grenier, who was far behind in the snatch but made a 157 kg C&J for the win, to beat Alexis Demers, who made lifts of 128+145. My clubmate Larry Robinson lifted 120+150.

The 85 kg class was between Buck Ramsay of Toronto, and Olympian Serge Tremblay of Quebec. They both tied with 141 in the snatch, while Serge jerked 175 kg. Buck opened with 176, and lifted the weight overhead 3 times but had trouble controlling the weight overhead. Some would argue he was motionless long enough for his lifts to be successful, but all three attempts were turned down.

In the 94s, the category had a lot of fierce competition. It included Dalas Santavy, of Sarnia, Nick Roberts, training out of Toronto, Sasha Amede and Guy Marineau of Quebec, and Miles Dowswell of Ontario. Miles has been making a comeback to the sport, and was able to snatch 137 kg. Guy Marineau had an off day and finished his snatches at around 136 kg? Dalas Santavy was successful with 136 and 141 kg, before missing 145 kg. Nick Roberts made a 141 opener, but failed twice with 146 kg. Amede missed his opener, but came back with 145 kg to take the lead. Amede made all three attempts in the C&J to finish with a 320 total. Roberts missed 180 and 181 kg, before deferring to Dalas Santavy who then had difficulty with that same weight, before making a clutch 3rd attempt. Roberts again could not jerk 182 kg so the win went to Santavy.

The 105's were won in typical style by Akos Sandor, and 105+ went to Parm Phangura of BC (145+191).

On Sunday, a svelte Maryse Turcotte got the morning started in the 48 kg class. As she later explained, she no longer has the energy she once had, and the lighter bodyweight allows her continue lifting. I didn't see the session but I was told she lifted 94 in the jerk. I also missed the 53 kg category.

63 kg class was a shocker, with Christine Girard snatching 100 kg, and C&J 127 kg before finally missing 130 kg. She smashed existing national records in both lifts and the total.

Jean Lassen, 69 kg,  had a tough day and missed her opener 3x in the snatch with 100 kg. The class was won by an upcoming junior from Quebec with lifts of 91+116.

Shaun,

Thanks for the report. I was thrilled to see Francois Lagace's name.  I lifted with him in several/numerous contests and always thought he was a blast to be around. You must send him my best the next time you see him...

in the 85's i didnt see buck first attempt at 175 but i know that his second was turned down for an elbow touch not because he wasn't motionless. and he only deadlifted his third attempt. also in the 77 francis did snatch 126  so he was only 2 kg behind demers. in the 94 guy marineau was in great shape but he hurt his leg doing farmwork, caused by a nail. the wound infected. he was in pain when he snatched 135 and could only power clean. great performances by everyone overall, then a great party
