Leg Question on the Jerk
« on: May 16, 2007, 01:26 PM »
Ok, I noticed something when doing some lifts and was wondering if you all had input.  When I do split squat/presses I find that I have more balance with my left leg forward and planted and thus I feel stronger.  Now I am right leg dominant and have always done the jerk throwing my right leg forward.  I know my right leg is stronger than my left as well.  But when split squat/pressing with my right foot forward I am more off balance.  Would there be merit or would it be beneficial if I switched which leg I throw forward in the jerk?  Would it make that much of a difference?

Coaches usually test there athletes which leg they prefer to put forward in the jerk.  I think the test is having the athlete stand on a platform and then the coach goes behind them and shoves them forward and whatever foot the athlete puts forward first is usually the foot you put forward in the jerk.  I am right footed for football/soccer but put left leg forward in the jerk.

Andy I would stick with the right leg forward for the time being, and have a closer look at what your left leg is doing when you split. Is it twisting or turning outward? How is your stance? That can affect your stability. Just an idea for now.

Leg Question on the Jerk

Ok, thanks for your suggestions.  When i started wrestling they did that test with the push and that is why I used my right for everything so it just felt natural to continue with the right forward in the jerk.
