Cheryl Haworth Wins Tenth USA National Championship
Cheryl Haworth of Coastal Empire Weightlifting captured her 10th straight national title Sunday at the Senior National Championships in Schaumburg, Ill.
The 24-year-old Savannah native lifted 125 kilos in the snatch and 155 in the clean and jerk for a 280 total to win the women's 75-plus kilo class.
Haworth, who trains at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo., was named the best female lifter. She made all six of her lifts to earn a spot on her sixth straight U.S. world team. The world championships will be held Sept. 11-25 in Chiangmai, Thailand.
Anthony Martin of Coastal Empire Weightlifting was in position to win the men's 94-kilo class, but missed all three of his attempts in the clean and jerk. The 25-year-old Savannah native had a lift of 196 kilos over his head on the final lift in the clean and jerk, but dislocated his left elbow and suffered possible ligament damage, according to team spokesman Bob Haworth.
Four members of Team Savannah also competed over the weekend. Sarah Davis finished second in the women's 58-kilo class with a 164 total, Henry Brower was second in the men's 69-kilo class with a 285 total, Jenna Bussard was third in the women's 75-plus kilo class with a 218 total and Joshua Squyres was fifth in the men's 94-kilo class with a 301 total. Brower finished one kilo out of first place after missing his final two attempts in the clean and jerk at 162.
Rachael Hearn, also from Savannah, competed unattached and placed fourth in the women's 75-plus kilo class with a 210 total.
