Jim,
Outstanding post! Great information from you as usual. Thanks for sharing your research. The photos that you shared are amazing and really illustrate the differences in the elite lifters.
My reading lately (Harvey Newton, RA Roman, Medveydev) has told me that the lifter's feet should be in contact with the floor as long as possible during the pull. If you watch my snatch miss video (and most of my misses) I tend to "toe pull". I know that my biggest problem is that I am not getting the bar back over my heels enough at the initiation of the explosion phase which pushes the bar away from my body. I need to correct this problem and so I thought I would perform snatch pulls in the manner I did that day. Normally I would have gone on my toes, but I am trying to teach my body something slightly different.
I would love to hear from other coaches out there whether or not this is an effective training method for my snatch lift and its particular hitch. At the very least it has stimulated an outstanding, educational discussion!
Dane, thanks for the website. Great videos! The athlete in the videos (Matt Bruce) is amazing! I will be showing those videos to some of my HS lifters! The back squat video is simply awesome! The 18 yo lifter squats 170kgs for several reps with absolute ease at a body weight of 77kgs or so!

The bar pops out at the very top of the pull, keep it closer.
Regarding ankle extension- it is one those areas where you will find some disagreement between even the best coaches. My personal opinion is that the best option will vary lifter to lifter and that it is best to do what works best for a given lifter. This also goes along with the saying that some are good in spite of what they do not because of what they do.

I think Matt is 21 soon to be 20. But it is still amazing. He's probably one of the top five seniors lifters right now.

Ryan,
The video was shot in 2005 or earlier I think. Gayle refers to him in one of the videos as being 18 at the time. The USAW 2006 National Championship info lists him as 23, so I guess he turned 23 in 2006.
