Does this type of thing bring any negative changes into the lift?
Its a rule that can be broken. I have seen elite lifters do well with the head down. But, it doesn't help a lifter who has problems keeping a flat or arched back. It can cause problems.

i dont tend to have issues with rounding my back at all, but i will keep an eye out in training tonight thanks

for a side view this lift is generally, OK, that is Good, however a front view or angled view would be more information, even side faults can be pick up or estimated from front and angled views!
There is no shortage of stories where a small business person has been hit with tens of thousands or more of legal costs from their own lawyers. Then there is the potential of having to pay for the other sides legal costs if the small business person loses

Thanks for the responses.  Rowan, I weigh about 88kgs and I turned 40 last week.

I don't believe I generally have a problem with a rounded posture so the head down shouldn't be an issue.  I usually have the problem of the bar moving away from my body  right at lift off if my head is too high.  This is a problem in my snatch, maybe not in the clean, but I pretty much keep the same start posture in the clean and the snatch.

I think I was mentally imaging a little more than normal at the start of this PR.  I remember staring at the floor a little more as I mentally focused on how I wanted the lift to go.  I guess I need to add another point to the mental check list - head up.  Thanks for the responses.

I don't advise looking up. It also can cause problems. I advise looking straight ahead, a few feet in front of you, just like a sprinter out of the blocks should do.

Chris and Jim,

Thanks for the great advice.  I hope to put it to work tomorrow (3/24) at the East Coast Classic.  I will post results and video when I get the chance.

I recommend that if you havent made changes to training, not to change your head position in a competition as a one off. Stick to what you are used to for now, and make modifications when back in training.
