Video: How to Squat
« on: Mar 07, 2007, 01:08 PM »
I just finished a video on the squat.  It is meant for the beginner or for someone looking for information on how to squat correctly.  Let me know what you think.

By clicking on the link below, I believe that you will be earning a little money for the Weightlifting Exchange for referring a watcher to a Revver video.

Thanks for looking.

Paul,

In order for us to be an affiliate of Revver and make money from referral clicks, we need to be able to embed the active code in our posts. Hopefully, we will be able to do this at some point, but for now WE doesn't make any money from such referral clicks.

Nice job on the video. I clicked on the ad so you would make a few cents. Thanks for sharing.

I was hoping that the WE would make some money by me posting the link to the video.  Maybe that is a feature we could add for those of us who enjoy making video and posting it here.  That technology is out of my knowledge base so I don't know if that is feasible on a forum community such as this, but it would be a great way for you guys who do so much for this community to make some money.

Thanks for watching the video.

Great vid Paul!

I can tell you that if you ever make an intermediate video on the Olympic style backsquat specifically, from my experiences with powerlifters, bodybuilders, and strongmen, is that there could possibly be one additional step. Many powerlifters and others, may be only in the habit of squatting to parallel, claiming that their hamstrings and thighs meeting together prevent them from going any deeper.

I have found that by telling the trainee "squat between the legs, not on top of them" and telling them to setup in the hole like a "frog preparing to jump", they are able to open up their hips and attain a squat much deeper than parallel, even for the heavyweights.

The next upgrade to the site should incorporate this ability, along with many, many others. But, John is very busy right now so I don't know when its going to happen.

Thanks

Josh,

Thanks for the advice on the hip position between the legs.  I actually used that wording today in teaching somebody the squat.

I have used that wording before, but usually I haven't needed it.  I guess that is because I generally am teaching JH and HS kids who have never squatted before.  I have gotten pretty good results with beginners teaching them the way I do in the vid.

Good advice, thanks and another work I may consider adding if I ever redo it.

Yeah Paul, that's advice just from a stubborn fat strongman/powerlifter type that personally had a hard time "learning" to squat right. Heeled shoes and front squats are what taught me to correct it.

I really like getting athletes to front squat.  Many young athletes have poor form in the squat and their trunk really leans forward ending up performing a squat that looks more like a good morning.  These guys really improve their squat by performing the front squat.  The front squat really forces a better trunk posture (more upright).  I have noticed that by adding the front squat to our football players routines regularly that their form has improved in the back squat and their cleans have gone up.  It is a great exercise and I will be making a video on that soon also.
