hey all trying to improve my lifts especially my snatch as i find that this is the lift i have most problems with been training with a friend who has seen me perform many lifts and has identified that i pull to much with my arms (thanks nathaniel), methods to correct this and other suggestions on other parts of my technique that i need to work on would be great as i am relatively inexperienced and dont want to engrain bad lifting habits into my technique :) thanks

hey peter, how's things? ya your definately pulling with the arms. they seem to bend at about knee level. really try to rotate those elbows out and pull the shoulders back cos u also seemed to be a bit hunched over. try keep the bar a lot closer cos you were chasing it and had to jump forward as a result. id say do some snatch deadlifts with a shrug at the top for a while, making sure the arms stay straight. keep it relatively quick though! snatch from the blocks, hang and deadhang would also help. another exercise i find helpful and are snatch jumps from hang. basically all it is is a pull from hang but with a simultaneous vertical jump and shrug. i do them in my warm ups and find them very good!

Hello,
Agree with previous post. Also you seem to be a bit of a fidget in the starting position and are rocking around (like I used to do) and this causes the bar to move out before you start the lift, particularly on the right hand side. So stop fidgeting!

Peter,
First off, you are definately making progress since the last time I saw you lift, in person. So well done for that.
The main thing I would recommend is working on your start position. You dont look particularly strong setting up. I think you need to work on flexibility as it looks like your back in particular is rounded and not "set" before the lift.
Work on the flexibility in your hip flexors and hip adductors.
Work on the strength in your glutes, particularly glute medius by really keeping your thighs apart and knees out when squatting (dont let them buckle in, in the slightest. If they do even slightly, reduced the weight).
Work on the strength of your lower back: romanians, good mornings, glute ham raises, hyperextentions, reverse hyperextentions. Perhaps even snatch deadlifts.
It would be my advice to get the start position right and worry about other problems a little later. Maybe just try to keep your arms relaxed a little more.

thanks for all the feedback will deffienlty incorporate the suggestions into my training. i agree completely about the issues raised about my start position i do not feel completely comfortable in this position so will work on flexibility and strengthning my glutes and try and stop my fidgeting as well!! dont know why i do it just kind of happens :) but will work on this over the next few weeks and try and solve it as the start position is the key to performing the rest of the lift well. plenty of suggestions cathal thanks for those will keep me busy in the gym over the next few weeks :) . nathaniel did a fair bit of snatch from the blocks and found it benefical so must do the same myself i do notice that i find myself tending to come back from the bar over the first pull and the following transition do you (or others) think i should try and tilt my uper body a bit more forward over the bar to compensate for this at the start?? or this could be due to the point mentioned by eamon about lower back strength which i am currently trying to adress via romanians and good mornings. I look forward to working on all the points raised and posting in the future with hopefully a more improved technique and also a video of my clean and jerk which undoubtedly can do with some major improvements. thanks again for all suggestions :)
