If someone is banned can they still compete?  I thought one of those competitors was banned for life.

Weightlifting in the Benelux is not at a standard of that in other regions. The Benelux Championships was reintroduced to stimulate the countries of the Benelux (Belgium, the Netherlands and Luxembourg.

If you consider the quantity of athletes that actively compete in the Benelux (aprrox. 120 in all three countries including only 7 athletes in Luxembourg) the standard of lifting isn’t all that bad.

The organisation committee invited for these championships invited several countries of have a similar to slightly better lifting standard. The participating countries were the countries of the Benelux, Wales en Ireland.

The Welsh team had to catch an earlier plane back home and so all there male lifters competed in the male 62kg en 69kg group. The lifter you refer to was the Best lifter of the championships. When Rex gets around to editing the rest of the session you will see a couple more respectable lifts form athletes out Ireland and Belgium.

Interesting to note is that one of the Dutch lifters Karen Tovmasjan (only 16 years old) has since the Benelux Championships in November improved his total by 16 kg. He now lifts 200kg in the male 69kg class.

The way he is improving he has a potential to win medals at the European Youth Championships later this year.

Good explanation Ryan.  It seems to be like the European Small Nations competition that used to (and possibly still is) held.

I was only enquiring as I had seen a doping list of currently banned British lifters (http://www.weights.demon.co.uk/yne/index.htm) and one of the lifters competing was on it.

It also seems that the date of birth was wrong as there is no way he is approximately 19 (http://www.commonwealthgames.org.au/gamesinfo/pastgames/1994/Finalists_Weightlifting.htm)!

Ok, I see!

I don't wanna be a d!ck, he made some very good progress but for a medal in the EYCH he needs to do over 260kg total, most likley. But either way it's outstanding work by him. Hope he continues to progress.
