2007 World Team Ranking
« on: Dec 05, 2006, 10:43 AM »
I comprised a ranking list off of performances at the 2006 World Championship or the 2006  American Open with the new worlds team selection criteria we will use for 2007 to maximize team points and if the team were picked today there would be 5 first time World Championship participants for the USA.  What are everybody's thoughts?

Your numbers don't seem to be completely accurate. For instance, Lance Frye did 326, and Innocent Ukpong did 340 at the AO according to Butch Curry's tabulations.

Well, firstly the totals at the World Championships in the lighter weight classes were well below normal, and I can only assume that preparations for the upcoming Asian Games were at least partly responsible. The 69 kg weight class in particular had some of the lowest results in years. No offence to Chris Yorkowitz and Jake Johnson but their results are not in the same league as those of Lance Frye or Matt Bruce, according to previous worlds totals or by rating formulas such as Sinclair. This should be evident to anyone that pays attention to the lightest weight classes.

Aside from that there is nothing to disagree with. The lack of depth in North American lifting makes it pretty easy to select teams.

I did not use the American Open Totals for Lance Frye and Innocent Ukpong because I believe lifters who competed at the World Championship do not have the option to use their American Open Total for qualification purposes.

I also agree that Matt Bruce and Lance Frye are more impressive 77's than Jake and Chris are 69's, but I did not develop the world team selection criteria.  I only followed the format they have selected.

You DIDN'T develop the world team selection criteria?

If the facts are the facts and you just want subjective opinion, I think the plan will fall flat. As it stands now, good luck to the 69 kg lifters in particular, an unreasonable burden has been placed on your shoulders.

Shaun,

Just my viewpoint, but I think much of the reason the 56-69kg classes in our country are not at their best compared to the past is that there has been little incentive in these weight classes. I think the selection system was biased against the lighter classes for quite a while now, basically since the Olympic slots went to this current quota system. Perhaps this will stimulate some better results in those classes.

The objective is to take lifters that will place the highest and, therefore, score the most team points.  For example, a 105+ totalling 370 might place higher than a 94 who totals 365.  I'd have to look at the results of the '06 Worlds, so that is just a hypothetical situation.

The question is if this is the best way to arrive at this objective.  One concern is that next year, the Worlds are likely to draw more Asian lifters in the lower weight classes.   The depth in the lower classes is fluid and changes from year to year, sometimes quite a bit.  The supers generally have the least depth.

There is no completely fair method and I suppose hind sight is always 20/20.  Hopefully, it will work out for the best.
