Greek Weightlifter Gets Suspended Prison Sentence For Doping

Greek Olympic weightlifter Leonidas Sabanis received a suspended six-month prison sentence on Friday for taking a banned substance during the 2004 Athens Olympics.

Sabanis, the winner of the bronze medal in the 62-kilo category at the 2004 summer games, was found to have tested positive for testosterone.

It is the first time that Greece has passed down a suspended prison sentence to an athlete caught doping during a sporting event.

The Olympic Committee ended up stripping Sabanis of his bronze medal.

Among those called to testify were Greek weightlifting national team trainer Christos Iakovos and Greek Olympic medal winner Pirros Dimas.
