Lifter Sets State Records in First Meet

Los Alamos High School senior Sarah Kratzer set two New Mexico Junior Women's Olympic-style weightlifting records at the 2006 Fall Matchup Invitational last Saturday.

Kratzer, 17, set new state age and weight standards of 31 kg. in the snatch and 43 kg. in the clean and jerk.

The event was held at Carl & Sandra's Gym in Santa Fe, where Kratzer trains.

She took up weight training to cross-train for track and field - she is a sprinter, hurdler and jumper - but as her performance steadily improved, personal trainer Shane Miller suggested that Kratzer attempt to break the weightlifting records she was coming close to.

"I enjoyed it," Kratzer said of her first event. "It was different from other competitions I've been in."
