Davis Girls Lift Way to Titles at Mid-American Championships  

SCHERERVILLE, Ind. -- Kierstyn and Kari Davis won titles as all five lifters from the Charleston Parks and Recreation Department Weightlifting Club traveled recently to the Mid-America Open Weightlifting Championships came home with awards.

In the age 13-and under-division, 9-year-old Joe McKirahan finished third in the 77-pound class with lifts of 33 pound in the snatch and 40 in the clean and jerk. This was Joe’s first meet. Finishing second in the same class was Nathan Sewell, age 8, who made lifts of 35 in the snatch and 55 in the clean and jerk. Nathan only weighed 60 pound He has been lifting for a year.

Winning the 123 pound class was B.J. Knoop. He made lifts of 50 in the snatch and 66 in the clean and jerk. B.J. is 12 and this was his first meet, also.

Kierstyn Davis, age 12, won the 13-and-under 138 class with lifts of 112 in the snatch and 139 in the clean-and-jerk. Weights are uneven increments because they are being translated into pound from kilograms

Kari Davis won first place in the 14-17 year old over 165 pound class. She is 14 and both she and her sister Kierstyn are national champions in their age groups. Kari made lifts of 150 in the snatch and 198 in the clean-and-jerk. She barely missed qualifying for the American Open National Championships in Birmingham, Ala. in Dec., which is the second highest level meet in the US, and which has no age limits.

Several of the lifters will travel to St. Joseph, Mo., soon to compete.

Then, they will hold a small meet in the gym, then a few may travel to Birmingham, Ala., in December, then to Cincinnati in December. Next year meets include Chicago, Ind., Ohio, Mo., and maybe Reno, Nev.
