Iranian champion retains title
SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic (CP) - Iran's Hossein Reza Zadeh failed to deliver promised records, and settled for gold medals as the world weightlifting championship drew to a close on Saturday.
Less than a week after it was announced that nine Iranian teammates had been banned from the championships for failing doping tests, the two-time Olympic champion swept the snatch (202 kilos), the clean and jerk (246) and the overall (448) in the super heavyweight class (over 105 kilos).
Several Canadians competed at the event in various weight categories. Montreal's Jean Elisabeth Lassen had the best showing, finishing third in the women's 69-kilos category behind winner Oxana Slivenko of Russia. Marie-Eve Beauchemin-Nadeau of Candiac, Que., placed 18th.
Other Canadian women's results include Marilou Dozois-Prevost of St-Hyacinthe, Que., and Maryse Turcotte of Sherbrooke, Que., who finished in 15th and 17th, respectively, in the 53-kilos class. Montreal's Emily Quarton placed 21st in the 58-kilos category, while, in the 63-kilos event, Christine Girard of Rouyn-Noranda, Que., placed 12th and Miel McGerrigle of Brampton, Ont., finished 19th.
On the men's side, Montreal's Francis Luna-Grenier had the best finish, taking 20th in the 69-kilos class. Sebastien Groulx of St-Hyacinthe, Que., finished in 24th.
Jean-Philippe Maranda and Montreal's Jean Lavertue took 33rd and 35th, respectively, in the 85-kilos category, while Toronto's Akos Sandor took in 21st in the 105-kilos class.
With victories clinched in all three lifts, Reza Zadeh passed on a third attempt in the clean and to eclipse the world record he already holds.
"I was going for the record, but I already had gold assured and I did not want to force myself too much because in some two months I have another competition in Qatar," Reza Zadeh said.
That competition is scheduled for Doha, Qatar, in December.
China's 20-year-old Dong Feng lifted 245 kilos to set a youth record in the clean and jerk and finished third in the overall (437).
In the men's 105-kilo class, Poland's Marcin Dolega won the snatch (193 kilos) and overall (415) titles. Russia's Dmitry Lapikov won the snatch with a lift of 194 kilos.
South Korean champion Jang Mi-ran won women's overall title in the over-75-kilo class (314 kilos) along with her clean and jerk title (179). China's Mu Shuangshuang won snatch (136) and finishing second overall (314).
