USA Weightlifting Returning To Chattanooga IN 2008
The Greater Chattanooga Sports and Events Committee announced today that Chattanooga has been awarded the 2008 USA Weightlifting National Junior Championships after a bid presentation in Shreveport, La., on Monday.
Sports Committee President Merrill Eckstein and Speed and Strength owner Steve Fauer presented before 61 delegates at USA Weightlifting’s annual meeting.
The event will be held at the Chattanooga Choo Choo on Feb. 8-10, 2008 in the Conference Theater.
Approximately 200 athletes are expected to participate and over 500 visitors should attend including coaches and parents. The age limit for the Junior competition requires the athletes be 19 years old or younger. Chattanooga last hosted a USA Weightlifting event in May 2003 when the city held the organization’s Senior Nationals.
Eckstein said, “Our bid went very well. We offered an excellent venue and a great city. Steve Fauer’s knowledge of the sport and his ability to run a great event played a big part in us getting this event. With more athletes in this competition, we expect visitor spending to exceed $100,000.â€
