Adidas Threatens to Scale Back Olympic Support Over IOC Sponsoring Row

Munich, Germany - Sports goods makers adidas are threatening to scale back their engagement in small Olympic sports over a sponsoring row with the International Olympic Committee.

'We must think about whether to continue our support for sports like luge, rowing and weightlifting if we are not allowed to show our logo,' adidas boss Herbert Hainer told German news magazine Focus in an interview made available ahead of Monday's publication.

Hainer said that he still hoped for an agreement with the IOC over the issue.

The IOC has denied adidas the right to make use of its famous three stripes on a large scale like in the past.

The new rule, after protests from rival companies, came into effect at the Turin Winter Games in February. Adidas found a way around the IOC ruling by printing digital numerals 3 on the athletes' kits, which from a distance looked like the familiar stripes.
