Caitlin Carter Lifts for Gold; Hopes to Qualify for Nationals

Caitlin Carter, a Willcox High School and Northern Arizona University graduate and Flagstaff resident, won gold at the Grand Canyon State Games, held at Dobson High School in Mesa on Saturday, June 17.

Competing in the 63 kilo weight class in the Senior age division, Carter, 21, went for four for six, making two-thirds of her lift attempts. She hit 57 kg. (124 pounds) in the snatch, and made a new personal best in the clean and jerk with 75 kg. (161 lbs.). The total was 130 kg. (286 lbs.).

The first place finish was especially sweet since Carter had had a challenging week of training prior to the meet. She now sets her sights on hitting goals in a lower bodyweight class in order to qualify for the national championships, which take place in Shreveport, La., August 11-14. She hoped to hit those qualifying marks at the upcoming Richard Border Classic Weightlifting Championship, which takes place at the Peaks Weightlifting Club on Saturday, July 8.

The Peaks, in Flagstaff, focuses on Olympic style weightlifting, sports-specific conditioning, and general fitness.
