Head Coach Liz McGreevy Welcome Five Newcomers for 2006
FAIRFIELD, CT (June 6, 2006) - Sacred Heart head volleyball coach Liz McGreevy announced the addition of five student-athletes who will join the Pioneers for the 2006 season. Junior transfer Tiffany Phoenix (Cresskill, NJ) along with freshmen Alex Bavasi (Flagstaff, AZ), Morgan Gross (Dumfries, VA), Annie Archer (Littleton, CO) and Katelyn Morin (Marston Mills, MA) will join the Pioneers this fall.
Phoenix, a transfer from Western Connecticut State University, is a 5-11 outside hitter who played at Cresskill High School. While at WCSU, Phoenix was named to the 2005 All-Little Big East second team while leading her team in kills as a freshman and sophomore. In her two years she amassed 641 kills, 62 aces, 483 digs and 122 total blocks.
While at Cresskill High, Phoenix was a two-time New Jersey All-State player (2002 & 2003) as well as a three-time all-county and all-league volleyball player. As a senior, Phoenix was named to the 2003 All-North Jersey Team as well as the Senior All-Star Team. She was a two-time team captain and the recipient of the Gatorade Will to Win Award in 2001. An all-state, all-county and all-league track athlete as well, Phoenix was the 2003 National Girls & Women in Sports Award winner for her accomplishments in both volleyball and track & field.
Bavasi is a 5-10 middle blocker from Flagstaff, Arizona. She played for Sinagua High School and for the Flagstaff Juniors Volleyball Club. She was named a 2006 United Dairymen/Arizona Coach's Association All-American. She was a two-year captain of her school's volleyball team and led her team to the Arizona State Tournament from 2003 through 2005. Her team was the 2005 4AII State runner-up and reached the Final Four in the State 4A Volleyball Championship in 2004. She was named all-conference and all-city in 2004 and 2004.
Beyond the volleyball court, Bavasi also excelled in track and basketball. She also excelled in the classroom winning the Arizona Interscholastic Association Scholar-Athlete Awards in volleyball, basketball and track from 2003-2006. She is also a nationally ranked junior weight lifter, holding the Arizona state record in the snatch and clean and jerk in three weight classes. She was a member of USA Weightlifting's Junior Women's squad training for three summers at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, CO and was a member of USA Weightlifting's Junior Pan American Team in 2005 where she placed eighth in 63 kg weight class.
Gross hails from Dumfries, Virginia where she attended Forest Park High School. The 5-7 setter also played for the Ichiban Volleyball Club. Gross captained both her high school and club volleyball teams. Named her high school team's Most Valuable Player she was also the recipient of the Cardinal District Player of the Year. An all-district and all-region player she was named All-Area First Team by the Potomac News and the Washington Examiner and a Top-Five Player to Watch by the Potomac News.
Archer comes to Sacred Heart from Littleton, Colorado where she played for Littleton High School and for the Colorado Performance Volleyball Club. The 5-11 middle blocker was an all-league selection her senior year. A co-captain, she was named team MVP as a senior. She was named to the Student-Athlete First Team as a junior and senior and an Academic All-Star in 2003 and 2004. Playing for Littleton High, a top-10 volleyball program in the state, Archer was named to the top-12 middle blockers in the state.
Morin is a graduate of Barnstable High School and hails from Marston Mills, Massachusetts. A 6-1 right side player, she also played for the Pilgrim Volleyball Club. She was named to the 2005 Massachusetts Girl's Volleyball Coaches Associations All-State Team for Division 1. From 2003 to 2005, Morin was the recipient of the Massachusetts Old Colony League All-Star Award. She guided her team to an undefeated four-years, with a record of 74-0; they claimed the Division 1 State Championship in 2003, 2004 and 2005. As a co-captain in 2005 she was named to the All-Cape Cod and Islands Team. Morin also excels in the classroom earning recognition on the 2005 Boston Globe and Boston Herald All-Star Scholastic Girl's Volleyball Teams.
