Sri Lanka Busted & Loses Solitary CommonWealth Gold
Sri Lanka’s weightlifting hero at last month’s Commonwealth Games in Melbourne, Australia, Chinthana Vidanage could lose his medal after testing positive for banned anabolic steroids.
A report from Melbourne says that medical experts who examined the urine sample of Vidanage have found traces of a performance enhancing drug. The reports of the test have been sent to the National Olympic Committee.
"This is a disgrace to the entire nation," said NOC chief Hemasiri Fernando adding that he could be banned from all future meets for two years. Chinthana Vithanage was the toast of Sri Lanka after he stunned everyone winning a gold medal in weightlifting at the Commonwealth Games in Melbourne. "From stringhopper poverty to world stardom," is how one media article described his achievement.
"We were all happy when he lifted the burden of the nation to clinch gold. But this information is shocking, to say the least," he added. Earlier, Sydney 2000 Olympic Games bronze medallist Susanthika Jayasinghe was slapped with a two year ban, after testing positive in 1997.
