Motion Analysis Video Software
« on: Feb 25, 2006, 09:26 PM »
I found this free software download after a reference to the software on the NSCA website.  The "Motion Analysis Tools" software seems to have been developed by a college professor who has made it available free for personal use.  It is meant for the Physical Therapy setting, but I have used it for analysis of weightlifting video.  It is limited to video in .avi or .mpg format, but there is a lot of free software available to convert video files if needed.  It isn't Dartfish, but it is free.

Probably the nicest feature of the software is its ability to measure joint angles (on a single frame or even total ROM of all joints throughout a specific motion).  It can even calculate bar speed if you can calibrate 1 meter in the frame.

The website for the software is http://www.rehab.on.ca/cag/mat/ and I found it by searching for "Motion Analysis Tools" on Google.

If you have any other questions about the software, please post and I will try to answer.  (Digital video is my second hobby)

Can this motion analysis tools software be used to track the trajectory of the bar throughout a series of frames? If for example a side on (sagittal plane) view was used and you clicked the endpoint of the bar in each frame.

I have played around with the software but cant get it to do this. Anybody else tried this? or know of another piece of motion analysis software (free) that would do this?

the file downloaded and opened for me just fine. However i dont quite understand. Should I be importing a video into it when it opens? It doesnt appear to let e open a video, rather it appears to be looking for a single image.

edit-----

disregard that. I just read the instructions telling me I need additional software to split the video file into individual frames. I will get a chance to try this out on sunday evening. Thanks very much for making the effort to convert this to english and to post it.

Eamonn,

No this software will not do this.  What I like is the ability to find joint angles and the ability of the software to track my bar speed.
