USOEC weightlifter mines gold

MARQUETTE — United States Olympic Education Center weightlifter Amber Davis of Chiefland, Fla., won gold in record-setting fashion at the 2006 National Junior Championships over the weekend in Altamonte Springs, Fla.

Davis (53 kilograms) lifted 73 kg in the snatch and 90 kg in the clean and jerk, totaling 163 kg.

Her combined total broke the junior national record and earned her a spot on the U.S. Junior World Team.

Davis also won the Best lifter Award for the junior women.

In addition, her performance completed her sweep of junior national records, as she holds marks in the snatch, and clean and jerk.

“All the hours in the gym, sweat and tears were all worth it when I made the total,” Davis said. “I’m looking forward to competing in my final Junior World Championships.”

She’ll next compete at the 2006 Junior World Championships May 25-June 3 in Hangchow, China.

“We had expectations for her and she lived up to them,” USOEC assistant weightlifting coach Lisa Brien said. “We’re glad to see her make the junior team.”

Davis’ USOEC teammates Collin Ito of Vista, Calif., and Alex Argueta of Aurora, Ill., also competed in the event.

Ito (105 plus kg) placed sixth with 302 points, lifting 130 kg in the snatch and 172 kg in the clean and jerk.

Argueta (63 kg) finished fourth with 152 points. She lifted 67 kg in the snatch and 85 kg in the clean and jerk.
