What are your views on two training sessions per day? I was thinking of getting an AM workout with very light weights about two days per week. Some say that it really helps, especially for the PM workout that same day.

Gilberto,

I believe double sessions are critical for young, elite athletes. The work capacity must be built while the athlete is young or it will never be built. Double sessions allow more work to be done at a higher intensity. They are also an excellent way to "prime the pump" and facilitate a superior workout in the second training session as well as in competition where the session starts later in the day or night.

Thanks for posting. Its an extremely interesting subject.

I think another great benefit of the double session is the neuro-muscular benefit.  Success in weightlifting is dependant on the athlete's ability to produce power.  Power is defined as work/time.  So in our sport, power is the nerve's ability to recruit muscle fiber faster.  This can be trained and is not just a product of nature (the nature or nurture debate of speed).  The double sessions use lighter weights and almost exclusively train the neuro-muscular pathway.  You are training speed in those sessions, so use lighter weights and do it as fast as possible while maintaining proper form.  The athletes may feel more tired but they will probably also notice that they have "more pop" for lack of a better term.

The biggest challenge in weightlifting, beyond the doping problems, talent, mentality, and persistence, is money. Find a sponsor(s) or hang tough and earn a spot at the OTC, or realize it isnt meant to be.

Its a cruel world and weightlifting is more cruel than the world.
