Three Cannon Falls Weightlifters Are State Champions

Three Cannon Falls High School weightlifters were named state champions and four state records were broken when CFHS hosted its first olympic lifting state championships.

Alica Emery, Megan Ripley and Neal Padrta took home championships, and Emery and TJ Martin set state records.

Emery re-wrote the record books in three categories. Her marks in the snatch (61 kg.), clean & jerk (73 kg.) and total (134 kg.) were all state marks. Martin set a record in the clean & jerk (100 kg.).

Second place finishers were Harlie Miller, Kira Moline, Sam Kurtz, Jared Thompson, Ryan Peterson and Nathan Ripley, and third place went to Emmy Miller, Shannon Ripley and Chanse Durdahl. Other competitors were Davey Silva, Martin and Zach Otto.

Emery, a sophomore, was invited to be a part of Team Minnesota, which will compete at Junior National in Altamonte Springs, FL, this weekend. Also lifting will be Cori Safe of Cannon Falls. Lifters age 20 and under can compete.

Team Cannon placed 2nd in the schoolage division and 3rd in the junior division. Farmington was the schoolage winner, and Northfield won the junior division. Divisions are combined men and women.

“We’d like to thank the many volunteers who helped with the meet, which was a great success in every way,” coach Todd Ulrich said. “A special thanks to Dr. Matt Maki, who donated his time and services as a medic. Our school facility, Olympic size platform, food concessions and meet organization were viewed by most to be impressive and professional, thanks mainly to meet director Scott Safe.”

At an awards banquet held Feb. 26, Harlie Miller and Durdahl were named most improved lifters, Nathan Ripley was presented with the Ironman award, and Safe was acknowledged for his 17 years as head weightlifting coach at Cannon Falls.
