I was hoping some of the members would take a look at the following videos of a lifter I train with and offer some advice, particularly regarding his technique in the clean.

The first video posted is a snatch at 75kg. The individual has lifted a maximum of 80kg in training. He has been seeing good progress with the snatch over the last 6 months and our own video assessments of his technique seem to show good technical improvements (rather than just increasing the poundage with the same technical mistakes occcuring repeatedly). However any feedback/recommendations would still be very much appreciated here.

The second video is a clean at 90kg. The lifter is struggling much more with the clean than the snatch. The lift feels more laboured for him and as you will see from the video, he is jumping very far forward under the bar. He used to do this somewhat in the snatch but has greatly improved this aspect in the snatch. I have attached a screenshot from this lift, with the lifter in full extension. Is he over extended? It appears to me that he is swinging too far back off the bar, losing control of the bar. It then moves forward and he has to jump excessively forward to receive the bar in a stable position. Any feedback as to how this problem could be rectified would be hugely appreciated. Or if there are other problems please point out.

You seem overeager at the top of the pull, leaning forward to the balls of the feet/toes early and pushing the hips forward into the bar. I would suggest trying to be more patient and waiting for the back to extend to a more vertical position before shifting to the balls of the feet. Stay on flat feet longer, pull the bar back more into the hips at the top of the pull instead of pushing the hips so much forward into the bar. This should stop the forward hop.

Hello,

I think Chris is right.  The bar seems to be going forward and it looks to be due to the bar bouncing off the thighs.  I would also recommend drawing a line on the floor as to where feet are at the beginning so he can compare to the final position.  I found this useful for me when my feet were moving too far forward.

He also is pulling the bar quite high and going into a full squat and the bar is landing on him from a height and burying him which is making the drive out of the squat harder.

Thought I would post this vidoe of a missed lift as it seems to confirm the above point.

Pete, Chris, Would there be anything else seen in this missed lift that would change/confirm any of your opinions on the first clean video?

From what I see, that was the same- but worse.

Stay on flat feet longer, and pull the bar back (at the top) into the hips instead of pushing the hips forward into the bar.

Should I avoid pulling the bar so high or avoid dropping as low before coming out of the lower position??

When I began lifting and was being buried by the bar a Coach called George from St. Gabriels, Belfast suggested doing high, medium and lows.  So first rep pull the bar and catch in a high power clean position, second rep pull the bar so you are catching the bar with thigh roughly parallel to platform and third rep pull the bar to about hip height and catch in the full squat position.   He explained this was to get better timing with the bar and for you to know how far to go into a full squat to catch the bar.  Going further down in the squat than the height you have pulled the bar means it will hit you like a ton of bricks.

On the last video if you keep flicking between pause/play you will notice the 95kg is pulled high enough to get under except it is a too far out from the body to try and receive it.  This means the strength is there for it but technique needs improving.  Bar should brush the thighs but when first viewing people cleaning it may look like it is hitting harder because this is where the explosion for the second pull comes from.

Composite pic showing the path of the bar from start of 2nd pull to finish of top pull indicated with sloping red line, may be as much as an 8 to 9 inch forward path displacement.
