Herrick couple serves as I.W.F. Officials

REDINGTON SHORES – Richard (Doc) Herrick and his wife, Stella, just returned from the World Weightlifting Championships in Doha, Qatar, where they served as I.W.F. Officials.

They were two of the three I.W.F. officials from the United States. This is only the second time an American married couple has been selected and only the second couple in the history of the Olympic sport.

For the past 16 years, Doc and Stella, an athletic trainer, clinical pedorthist, and also a Category I International Referee, the highest ranking possible, accompanied many U.S. Teams as USA officials. This is the second time they were I.W.F. Officials in a World Weightlifting Championship together.

He is an internationally ranked masters-weightlifter with numerous world-championship medals. He also is a three-term member of the International Weightlifting Federation Medical Committee and has served as the official physician at many world and international competitions, including the Olympics in Sydney and Atlanta.

At the National Masters Weightlifting Championships in Savannah, Ga., he lifted a total of 335 pounds overhead and qualified for Team USA to compete in the Pan American Masters Weightlifting Championships next July, as well as to the World Masters Championships in France, later this year.

The Herricks moved to Redington Shores after being recruited by the Tampa Bay Orthopaedic Specialists where they eagerly await their next “Official” co-assignment.
