Video: Feedback on snatch technique
« on: Feb 13, 2006, 06:03 AM »
Hello all,

Ive been a long time lurker here on the boards. Thought I would make my first post. I'm relatively new to weightlifting, only really training for the sport properly in the last 12-16 months. I have struggled with the snatch more so than the C+J (102-1105kg PB) and would love feedback on my form/technique.

This is a recent video from training, 70kg snatch. 72.5kg is my PB (which I did shortly after this taped lift, but I didnt record it!).

One thing I should point out... Due to an old rugby injury on my shoulder I have difficulty keeping the bar behind my heading in the snatch receiving position on my right hand side. So I seem to get the bar back behind my head on my left hand side but it is over the middle or front of my head on the right hand side.

Any feedback would be hugely appreciated.

Eamonn

Hi Eamonn!
Good video- it is always inspirative to see a training video. If you have time post some more and properly. I started lifting only few months ago and my snatch is lower than yours so Im not mastered to give U a feedback. Dont forget that. :!:
What I saw:
1. You use-bend your arms too early...
2. Classic beginner thing the transition phase to the squat is slower...

Good luck!

Eamonn,

Welcome to the site and thanks for sharing. You seem as if you are uncomfortable descending and achieving a bottom position. I can't see your grip from that angle. Have you tried a wider grip? Do you do any overhead squats and/or drop snatches (aka-snatch balance)?

Chris, thanks for posting. Yes I am doing overheads (at least once per week) in an attempt to get more comfortable at the bottom. I've done drop snatches in the past and will start incorporating back into my snatch sessions I think. Perhaps use them as a warm-up and as I progress through the lighter weights (<50kg) toward my max?

Eamonn,

Sounds good to me. Anything you can do to improve your bottom position and speed getting to it will, I think, help. There is still the grip issue. A wider grip may help you get the bar back further if that is a problem. Also, you should make sure to work on stretching the shoulder with limited flexibility you mentioned. This could obviously be helping to cause this problem/opportunity.

thanks again. I do seem to have a slightly narrower grip than some of the guys I train with (of comparable anthropometrics to me). I usually have my middle finger on the rings. But i have played around with my grip width in the past and this was what felt most "comfortable" for me. I will perhaps adjust it again in my next few sessions and see what a slightly wider grip feels like. Thanks again for your feedback.
