exercises for wrists and forearm pain
« on: Jan 10, 2006, 01:34 AM »
Hey guys, whilst performing near max snatchs, i seem to bear a terrible load on my wrists that affect my forearms.

Do any of you prescribe exercises for the wrist? I try to work on flexability a lot...but this seems a strength issue.

I'm on the tail end of about a 6-week recovery from an injury to my right wrist (fell on outstretched hand).  After confirming no tears or fractures, I went to an ART doctor, who found all kinds of problems in BOTH wrists that have been aggravating me for some time and were pushed over the edge by my fall.

If your wrist is bothering you, back off of anything that hurts and get it checked out.  On the advice of Mike Burgener, I've also started snatching with a MUCH narrower grip, which has helped me tremendously by reducing the lateral torque on the wrist caused by a wider grip.  It's probably costing me a few kilos, but I'd rather lift a few kilos less than none at all!

Hey michael,

thanks for your reply.

I tried moving my grip in today (even before i read your reply!)
And it felt much better.
I even felt like i had more pulling power.

I will have to see how it works out in the long run

John - I'm currently snatching with my hands just outside the rings.  I'm 5'10", and was previously snatching with my hands about 1" inside the collars.

Dean - Glad to hear it.  I would stick with that for a bit to see if your wrist feel better, and then slowly begin to move your grip back out to its former position.  You may just find (as I think I am discovering) that you had too wide a grip before.  IMHO, unless OL is your life, I'm not so sure the extra grip-width is worth it past a certain point.

I destroyed my wrist tendon on a non-maximal snatch today. Its just that angle where the wrist is bent back a bit and also to the side (typical snatch catch position). Hurts when I put any load on it at that angle.

This incident has taught me to flex my wrist hard whenever I catch :(.
