The USAW Board of Directors
« on: Dec 20, 2005, 09:46 AM »
As the volunteer president of USAW I am extremly pleased to do my first post here on the weightlifting exchange.  I would like this to become my way of communicating to the members in a more professional setting.  I can tell you that the USAW is setting up our new web site and it won't be long before it will be up.  This web site will allow you to register as a member or even enter the competitions.  Here are some current activities of the board.  We are working on the 12 and under weight classes for the schoolage nationals and I have suggested that we use the current AAU weight classes as they have lighter divisions.  Also, I have asked for the board to consider four lifts instead of five to be counted for the total as I have run meets with both and the four lifts (drop one snatch and one clean and jerk) seemed to work best.  There will be a special board meeting the first saturday in Feb.  This meeting will be concerning the 2006 world championships as we will be discussing the possibilty of a training camp and even a selection process of picking the non 100% qualifyers to try and place as high as possible as the 2006 worlds because it will be a qualifyer for the 2008 olympics.  This will create havoc with many members as It would be possible to be bumped off the team by a lower qualifyer.  This board meeting will be in Kansas City or Chicago as it is cheeper to go to as Wes is working for donations from those cities to host the board.  Again thanks to Chris for giving me a chance to communicate and I will keep you posted on current USAW events.

Dennis,

Thank you so much for sharing this information. This is some excellent news regarding both the website and keeping the 12 and under kids involved without missing a beat. It is also great that the USAW is making every attempt to cover all the bases when it comes to making sure kids are training like kids and having fun in the sport of weightlifting.

Being able to register or renew our USAW membership via website credit card payment is awesome for the members, but it surely will save the USAW office heaps of time. I understand that when you say even enter competitions, you are hinting at a very groundbreaking feature for the new USAW site, a custom database for competition results. The ability to enter meets online without having to mail your entry form by certified mail is fantastic alone, but I understand this database will allow many more repetitive tasks at the USAW office to be automated. But, I will let that come out when the time is right. I can't wait to see the site, but I know these things take time to do right, no hurry.

Again, thank you Dennis, and welcome.

John,

Thanks for jumping in. As I understand what you are saying, and from conversations with Wes Barnett (USAW Executive Director), the ranking lists that will be available for viewing in real time will be of all sorts. So, for instance, once results are uploaded by the meet directors, ranking lists for selection to international teams, OTC camps, the USAW funding lists, or whatever, can all be instantly sorted out, and the results of the competition will be available for members to view right away. Local results will feed into start lists for national meets, score sheets, and results- an integrated system saving massive amounts of time.

I expect many countries around the world are going to want what the USAW is creating. This is going to change a lot of things in a very good way. And, I understand the site will do much more not yet mentioned...

Two Questions For Dennis
Dennis:

It was my understanding that the USAW was considering hiring a marketing person at the National Office to assist Wes in marketing weightlifting to the general public. Has there been any progress in this area or has the idea been been delayed or tabled?

At last years BOG meeting Wes mentioned that a fund raising task force was being formed. Has there been any progress in this area? If they need someone to chair or assist in setting up the task force I would be interested in volunteering to help. I would think the purpose of the task force would be to provide the Board with suggestions in this area. I have some experience in this area.  My business partner was on the economic task force for the State Of Hawaii, which produced some phenomenal results. Would this be something that would need to be presented to either the BOD or the BOG?

Thank you in advance for your response. I would much rather be a contributor to the sport then a critic.

Aloha'
Jim

Jim-  Good on you!  It's great to see people volunteering to help.  I hope that kind of attitude becomes contagious.  Let me know if I can pitch in somehow.  Joe

Task Force

Joe:

It would help a lot if we could find out what happened to the task force that Wes said was formed.  If we knew who was head of the task force and could get a hold of them and find out what the status is and if any progress has been made.  Perhaps you can get some information on the task force from Wes.

If you are unable to get any information then we could proceed to form a ad hoc task force and throw some ideas around and present it to the BOG or BOD.  Obviously some type of benefit package to sponsors would need to be put together. At the very least we could come of with a list of contacts that the USAW could follow up on.  Then of course this would be assuming the USAW wanted more sponsors and more revenue. Let me know your thoughts and if you are interested, I can put together an outline with some thoughts and action steps we could follow to get the ball rolling.  Thanks, Joe
