Some pics of Russian athletes in training before the 2005 WC in Doha...

Also, an interesting segment from a post-championship interview with Dmitry Klokov:

Q: How about the Turkish lifters banned from the championship because of the doping issues. Overall, is it a painful topic to talk about today?

A: Nah, everybody knows what is allowed and what is not. The substances that are allowed and effective are simply very expensive. The slavic nations are still very strong and, if everybody will have equal financial opportunities, we certainly will be the strongest. When we get to the competitions, we can see how the Iranians, representatives of a wealthy oil-producing nation, don't sweat over the doping control, get to the tournaments being overfed as if it is like some special dinner occasion. It hurts. The rest of us exhaust our body resources, injured all over, angry, hungry but certainly mentally charged up to compete... Due to this mental charging, we still somehow manage to win...

Thanks for the pics...that's a nasty scar on Chigishev's left forearm - any idea what was the cause?

mike, i don't really know the origins of the scar on chigishev's arm... i've heard that he had an injury but i forgot what it was related to...

overall, the guy really impressed me in doha'05. i watched it on tape while knowing the results and that the crowd booed him over there... not just him but everybody but reza... the whole competitions looked like a segment from mad max 2 with tina turner and weird creatures around :)

anyway, i'll try to find out about the scar...

i read on fi.com that he and another lifter were attacked at knife point. Apparently the younger lifter died tragically...
