Soviet Height/Weight Chart

You may be wondering which weight class should you ultimately be in? Here is a table from page 83 of Robert Roman's 1986 text "The Training Of The Weightlifter". The heights are an average of the heights of the top Soviet lifters, plus or minus a standard deviation.

Class Height Class Height
52 kg 145 +/- 3 cm 82.5 kg 168 +/- 2 cm
56 kg 149 +/- 3 cm 90 kg 171 +/- 2 cm
60 kg 155 +/- 2.5 cm 100 kg 174.5 +/- 2 cm
67.5 kg 160 +/- 2 cm 110 kg 177.5 +/- 2
75 kg 164 +/- 2 cm SHW 186 +/- 6 cm

1 inch = 2.54 cm

Now, since the weight classes have changed a couple of times I have used a linear interpolation method to create a new chart for our current weight classses for men:

Class Height Class Height
56 kg 149 +/- 3 cm 85 kg 169 +/- 2 cm
62 kg 156.33 +/- 2.5 cm 94 kg 172.5 +/- 2 cm
69 kg 161.75 +/- 2 cm 105 kg 176 +/- 2 cm
77 kg 165 +/- 2 cm SHW 186 +/- 6 cm

Note: The original chart was compiled in the 1970s when most lifters did more pressing than they do now. In a more recent Soviet compiled chart, the average heights for each of the old weight classes is 4 cm taller (ie avg height for 75 kg class would be 168 cm). This chart is just a guideline and for your own interest.
